The diagrams and data tables made for Botany for the Curious can be copied, adapted and shared, including commercially, under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence (CC BY 4.0). This page sets out what that covers, how to give credit, and which material on the site is under other terms.

Diagrams drawn for the guide, and the CSV data tables offered for download, are released under CC BY 4.0. Each diagram comes with a credit line in this form, ready to copy:

Diagrams and tables built on data also carry a data line in the form data: {data source}, retrieved {YYYY-MM-DD}. It names the dataset the figure was drawn from and the date that data was retrieved; where the figures are the guide's own calculation, the line says "computed" instead. When a diagram is reused, the data line should travel with it, since some datasets carry attribution terms of their own.
The credit line includes the page address. A link back to that page is welcome, but it is not an extra condition: the CC BY 4.0 terms are the only terms, and they allow credit to be given in any reasonable way that suits the medium.
The licence covers only the layers drawn for the guide. When a diagram is drawn over a third-party base image, such as a public-domain garden plan, the caption credits the base image separately, and the base image stays under its own terms.
Material under ShareAlike licences
A diagram or table that adapts material released under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike (CC BY-SA) licence is itself released under a compatible ShareAlike licence, named in its credit line. Such adaptations are not relicensed under CC BY.
Photographs, scans and other third-party images
Photographs, scans of old books and prints, and other third-party images keep their own licences. Each caption gives the full credit: the title, the creator (or the credit the source asks for), the source page, the licence with a link, and any changes made, such as cropping or added labels. A public-domain item states why it is in the public domain, for example the year its creator died; an item is never treated as public domain merely because it is old. Reuse of these images follows their own terms, not the terms on this page.

Images captioned as illustrations are outside the CC BY release. Each one carries this notice:

Diagrams and tables on the site draw on the datasets below. Their terms apply to the data they supply, and each data line names the dataset and the version or date used.

Citing a page
Every article ends with a Cite this page box giving the site name, the title, the date of publication, the date of the last substantive revision and the permanent address of the page. Add the date the page was consulted. Botany for the Curious does not issue DOIs, so a citation should use the page address.
