Updated

Botany for the Curious measures visits in two ways, Google Analytics and Cloudflare Web Analytics, and receives the email people choose to send. The site shows no advertising. This page explains what each of these records and what choices are available.

Google Analytics

Google Analytics 4 counts visits and shows which pages are read. When it loads, it sets first-party cookies (such as _ga) so that one visit can be told apart from another, and it records the pages viewed, the site a visit came from, the type of device and browser, an approximate location, and interactions such as scrolling, clicks on links to other sites and file downloads.

Each time it loads, the site tells Google Analytics that advertising storage, advertising use of visitor data and ad personalisation are all refused. In the site's Google Analytics settings, Google signals is off, data sharing with Google is off, and event data is kept for 14 months. Google explains how it uses information from sites that use its services at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.

When Google Analytics loads

Whether Google Analytics loads depends on where a visit comes from. To find out, the page asks Cloudflare, which serves the site, for the country code of the connection, and uses the answer only to make this decision.

Visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Gibraltar, Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man are asked first. Until Accept is chosen, Google Analytics does not load and nothing is sent to Google; choosing Reject means it never loads. A visit whose country cannot be determined is treated the same way, and the question is asked.

Everywhere else, Google Analytics loads with the page. The same choice is still available from the footer link described below.

Changing your choice

The choice is saved in this site's local storage in your browser, not in a cookie, so the question does not come back on every page. A link in the footer of every page reopens it, and the choice can be changed at any time. Switching to Reject after accepting reloads the page without Google Analytics; cookies it set earlier remain in the browser until they expire or are cleared. Clearing this site's stored data in the browser removes the saved choice, and the question is asked again where it applies.

Cloudflare Web Analytics

Cloudflare, which hosts the site, also counts page views with Cloudflare Web Analytics. It uses no cookies and no local storage, so the choice above does not apply to it, and it runs for every visitor.

It loads a small file from static.cloudflareinsights.com after the page has appeared and sends page-view and page-load-time measurements back to this site's own address; Cloudflare says the service does not use fingerprinting. A content blocker set to block static.cloudflareinsights.com stops it. Cloudflare's privacy policy is at cloudflare.com/privacypolicy.

Email

Email sent to contact@botanyforthecurious.com is used only to handle that message, for example to look into a reported error.

Advertising and other third parties

The site carries no advertising, and no advertising code loads. If that changes, this page will be updated to name the advertising provider and explain its cookies and how to opt out. Fonts and images are served from the site itself, and no other tracking code, social-media widget or third-party font service loads on its pages.
